2nd Creative, Performing Arts & Media Research Forum

25th -26th April 2024

James Barry Exhibition Centre, MTU Bishopstown Campus, Cork, T12 P928

The Creative, Performing Arts & Media Research Forum is dedicated to fostering innovation and collaboration in the creative arts and media landscape. By bringing together artists, performers, scholars, and media professionals the forum aims to push the boundaries of creative expression and contribute to cutting-edge research in the field. This year’s event builds on the momentum of our first forum last year and by extending our goal of promoting innovation and collaboration across the areas of art, design, music, and technology. The forum this year will consist of an exhibition, presentations from local and international artists designers and technologists, with a panel discussion to support.

The two-day event will be formally opened Dr Susan Rea, recently appointed Director of the Nimbus Research Centre, at 13:15 on Thursday 25th April next. The opening event will promote a commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and pushing the boundaries of creative expression.

On Friday 26th the presentations from creative arts researchers will include those by Paul Gaffney, Brían Crotty, Helle Helsner, Chriszine Backhouse, Caitlin Kelly, Nicole Flanagan, Kevin O Mahony, Catherine Casey, Patryk Koc and Adam Nugent. The participants’ research is conducted at BA (Hons) Degree, Masters and PhD levels. The presentations will span a broad range of practices in various fields of creative practice and will address issues related to:  landscape photography; painting and cinema; sound design for accessibility; theatre and social justice; gesture design for smart environments; mining natural materials and sustainability; responsible software engineering;  AI in contemporary art; and collaborative learning and interdisciplinary practice.

This year as part of the expansion of the forum we have invited two international participants. Dr Varvara Guljajeva works in Computational Media and Arts and holds a post in Integrative Systems and Design at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Mar Canet is an artist researcher at Cudan Open Lab, Tallinn University, Estonia. The lab focuses on progressing research in the novel area of ‘cultural data analytics’.  Both artist researchers collaborate on creative projects that are influenced by contemporary state-of-the-art technologies and associated systems.
