Cork Centre for Architectural Education (UCC/MTU) is hosting the 15th All Ireland Architectural Research Group (AIARG) annual conference and exhibition on the theme of Architecture in the Critical Zone on Thursday 5th -Saturday 7th March in Douglas Street.

The term “Critical Zone” is taken from the geo-sciences and describes the biochemical, fragile layer of the earth, its surface on which life is created. Connected to the philosopher Bruno Latour (1947-2022), the term is extended to a critical, participatory relationship to our living world, whose threatened state has reached an unprecedented scale in the Earth’s now man-made history. Latour has described this worldwide situation, which affects all living beings on the planet, as a “new climate regime”.

The conference is transdisciplinary and includes traditional papers, films and artefacts by academics and practitioners on architecture, art, ecology, geography, philosophy and critical theory.
