CSM Sounds Launch -  Spatial Music, Vol 1

MTU Cork School of Music is delighted to announce the release of Spatial Music, Vol 1

The latest album on their in-house record label CSM Sounds.

Spatial music is a research focus of MTU CSM and refers to compositions where the position and movement of sounds within a 3D space are a central feature of the music itself, creating an immersive, three-dimensional audio experience for the listener. Technologies like Ambisonics, Dolby Atmos and binaural audio are used to achieve this, allowing sounds to be placed above, below, and all around the listener, going beyond traditional stereo sound.

To celebrate the opening of our new purpose-built Spatial Audio Lab, we invited proposals from 5 composers - Shane Byrne, Brian Leach, Thomas McConville, Joshua Dyson and Aoife Claffey to devise new work under the artistic direction and technical mentorship of CSM staff. The resulting compilation album from this residency is available now on all streaming platforms and features a diverse range of aesthetics and approaches. We believe this is one of the first releases of experimental music in the Dolby Atmos format from the island of Ireland!

We will officially launch this compilation with a special immersive performance over 12 loudspeakers in the Stack Theatre on Saturday the 6th of September at 3pm sharp. Attendance is free but limited and ticketed on Eventbrite.

We would like to thank MTU for supporting the residency and the construction of the Spatial Audio Lab through the Innovation Month and N-TUTORR initiatives.
