Artist Statement

My research project title: 'Materialising a sense of Place’, responds to our current moment of climate crisis. Ballyhighland woods, a small semi- natural woodland close to my home in Co. Wexford, acts as a case study, to think about a sense of ‘place’ and consider the mental and emotional connection between people and their natural world, in the light of ecological precarity and environmental degradation.

The work is based on the abstraction and manipulations of forms sourced from this place and they are an expression in formal and textile terms demonstrating my own complex emotional response to the climate crisis and the recent COVID pandemic.

As Timothy Morton from his book Dark Ecology states; ‘Dark ecology starts off dark as in depression then it becomes dark as in mysterious, then it becomes accustomed to strangeness through acclimation, a weird knowing.’ On the other hand, a not-knowing mind may be needed to consider new thinking for facing environmental and climate crisis.

I am processing these larger global ideas about planetary emergency and potential collapse, global health pandemic and the perilous nature of both humans and organic life at the moment. I am filtering them through an intimate familiar landscape on my local doorstep to think in a more global way towards our planet.
