Learning Architecture: Crawford Architects and The City Seventy Planning Group is an exhibition celebrating the work of nine people who were among the first to study and teach architecture in Cork, from 1956 at the Crawford Municipal School of Art, and/or were associated with the City Seventy Planning Group.

Featuring: Des Heffernan, John Heffernan, Neil Hegarty, Mary Leland, Gerald McCarthy, Gerard O Callaghan, John Santry, Walter Stansfeld, and Harry Wallace.

Panel discussion with this group at the Rory Gallagher Theatre, chaired by architect Patrick Creedon, and with an opening address by MTU President - Professor Maggie Cusack. The discussion will centre around the idea of the importance of a school of architecture in a city. The panel will be asked about their time at the Crawford Municipal School of Art and its influence on their subsequent varied careers and the contribution they have made to the landscape of the Southwest Region.

This will be followed by the opening of an exhibition at the James Barry Exhibition Centre which features drawings, paintings and writing from the group. Historian Shane Lehane will deliver the opening remarks for this exhibition.

Historical Background

The Cork Centre for Architectural Education (CCAE) has, for almost 20 years now, been providing educational programmes preparing candidates for registration as professional architects. Established in 2006 as a partnership between Cork Institute of Technology (now Munster Technological University) and University College Cork, the Centre aims to be at the forefront of driving the development of Architecture in the 21st Century, and the role of the profession in society. The BSc (Honours) in Architecture and MArch Degrees jointly offered by MTU and UCC through CCAE are exciting and innovative programmes providing an opportunity for architectural students to develop within a rich and supportive educational environment.

However, the history of Architecture Education in Cork goes all the way back to 1956 when the first full-time students of the discipline commenced their studies in the Crawford Municipal School of Art. As young architects they were involved in the City Seventy Planning Group that was influential in halting a plan to construct an elevated roadway system in Cork City, they were supported by the journalist Mary Leland in this work. Members of the Class of 1956 have played a critical part in shaping Cork’s landscape for the benefit of all.

Current CCAE students will also be involved in this event.
