‘Silence, I say! Silence! You can weep when you’re alone.’

Trapped in a house and a culture riddled with religiosity, malicious gossip, contempt for women and blatant hypocrisy, Bernarda Alba’s five daughters react to eight years of enforced mourning for their unloved father with rage, yearning, unsatisfied desire and dangerous, ultimately fatal ‘misbehaviour’.

For Irish audiences this lethal Spanish cocktail of traditional misogyny, puritanism and desperate rebellion is as familiar as yesterday’s news.

With a powerful ensemble from Year 3 BA Theatre & Drama Studies students, live music and short dance sequences draw on the lyricism and the sensuality of Lorca’s words to emphasise the intense physical drama underlying all the poisonous small talk, The House of Bernarda Alba is as compelling today as it was at the outbreak of the Spanish civil war that killed its author.
