Presented by graduates from CIT Crawford College of Art and Design and curated by Róisín Foley , Cork Thing is a body of work re-imagining the poetic prose of Charles Baudelaire’s Paris Spleen.

Artists have been invited to create new work based on a prose choosing from a variety of themes ranging from societal commentary, the city, religion, romance, humour, the artist, the sea, pleasure and intoxication, to give only a few examples. The works will be presented as autonomous imaginings, existing as minute endeavours co-existing to reflect the pages of prose that Baudelaire had manifested into the lives of contemporary Parisian city folk as part of the Parisian modernist movement.

The range of work will take form from artists varying in initial discipline ranging from video work to ceramics, painting, object making and sound works.

The project hopes to revise themes present in Paris Spleen, making them relevant in the contemporary Cork strata. Accompanying text and an artist’s zine will be presented alongside the work with written word by recent UCC department of Art History graduate Iris Swift.

This exhibition runs as part of the Avant (Cork) Festival which takes place in various venues across Cork City from 10 -31 July 2014. More information and a full programme available at http://theavant.wordpress.com
