The Púca, a shapeshifter and trickster depicted in Irish Folklore is borrowed as a guide for the processes and conceptual framing of this work. In my current artistic practice, I explore the self, not as a fixed entity, but as a culmination of internal and external encounters between others, both human and non-human across time, past, present and future.
Merging various materials and artistic strategies – drawing, stop-motion animation, projection, installation and sound – I revisit and respond to video footage of my infant play, where I am seen interacting with my shadow as a double or animal other.
By reconnecting with the embodied gestures of my childhood, and drawing from tales of the Púca, my work contemplates the contemporary unknown and unpredictable, ever-changing multiplicities of the self/other as shapeshifter.
