    Artist Statement

I am influenced by the natural flora around me, and my
current work explores the relationship of things being
in and out of focus. Detailed observations of plants
and water are contrasted by areas of haziness. I am
influenced by chinese ink paintings of landscapes,
and the philosophical ideas of absence as a form of
representation. The push and pull of things being both
representational and imagined questions the nature
of the landscape, and I aim to capture the ephemeral
quality of the places I am inspired by, not just their
physical makeup. There is a beauty in everything not
being easily read or completely in focus. The hazy
spaces on a canvas highlight the areas of detail,
create movement and balance. My ideas are initiated
through the process of observational drawing, and
through it I try to reveal my own inner world as well
    as the one I inhabit.
